This example left the factory finished in Lime Gold, and, according to a copy of the original window sticker, Rallye stripes were omitted from the dealer-installed options. It was repainted in black with white Rallye stripes at some point in the 1980s or 90s before being returned to its original color under current ownership. The seller notes that surfaces inside the trunk, including the inner fenders and trunk floor, have been painted black instead of the factory-specified body color. The seller notes that a detailing was performed within the last year by Rolling Art Motorsports in Scottsdale, Arizona. Walk-around videos of the exterior can be viewed in the video gallery below.
Kelsey Hayes Mag-Star 15” alloy wheels were optional for the model year and wear Goodyear Speedway tires. A Kelsey Hayes replica spare is housed in the trunk, though a factory Kelsey Hayes spare will also be included in the sale. Braking is power assisted and is handled by discs up front and drums out back. Close-up photos in the gallery below show the GT500 badges on the grille, trunk lid, and front fenders as well as the model-branded fuel cap.
Black knitted vinyl covers the front bucket seats and fold-down rear seat, and optional Deluxe touches include brushed aluminum trim on the dash and door panels. Equipment unique to Shelby models comprises a wood-rimmed steering wheel with a branded horn button and a roll bar with inertia-reel shoulder harnesses. The seller notes that the carpeting and headliner have been replaced, and areas of the seat seams have been re-stitched.
Instrumentation includes an 8k-rpm tachometer and a 140-mph speedometer, with a five-digit odometer showing 33k miles. Stewart Warner gauges for oil pressure and amperage are mounted under the center of the dash. The passenger side of the dash has been signed by Carroll Shelby, and a plaque bearing the original owner’s name is retained on the center panel. The car was ordered without air conditioning or a radio.
The 428ci V8 features hydraulic lifters and twin four-barrel Holley carburetors. Factory-rated output was 355 horsepower and 420 lb-ft of torque. As a Basic Order model, the car left the factory without Thermactor emissions equipment. Service performed in 2020 included an oil change, coolant flush, and tune-up, and the battery was also replaced while the car was under the seller’s care.
Shifting is through a numbers-matching Toploader four-speed manual transmission, and the Ford VIN is shown above stamped on the housing. Images of the Ford VIN stamped in the inner front fender under the Shelby tag are included in the gallery below, viewed from inside the wheel well. Additional component markings shown in the gallery include the following:
