BMW introduced the M3 Evolution as a limited-production homologation model beginning with the 1987 model year, and the Sport Evolution was produced for 1990. Compared to the M3 Evolution, the Sport Evolution featured increased power, a smaller fuel tank, and revised bodywork including front and rear spoilers with adjustable extensions, wider front fenders, and reprofiled grille slats.
This example wears a five-year-old repaint, reportedly in the original Brilliant Red, and features an electric sunroof, a rear spoiler, painted mirror caps, twin exhaust outlets, and wider fenders compared to the standard E30.
Gray 16″ basketweave wheels feature BMW center caps and are mounted with Hankook Ventus Prime tires. The MacPherson strut/semi-trailing arm suspension was revised for the M3 with a thicker rear anti-roll bar as well as shorter and stiffer springs.
The cabin features replacement sport seats as well as a rear bench upholstered in black Nappa leather. Amenities include an onboard computer, a Pioneer AM/FM/cassette stereo, air conditioning, cruise control, red seatbelts, and power windows, mirrors, and locks. A plaque on the center stack identifies the car as a 1990 Sport Evolution model.
The three-spoke M-Tech II steering wheel fronts VDO instrumentation including a 260-km/h speedometer and an 8k-rpm tachometer as well as gauges for oil temperature, coolant temperature, and fuel level. The six-digit odometer shows 188k kilometers (~117k miles), approximately 5k kilometers of which were added under current ownership.
The 2.5-liter S14B25 inline-four features dual overhead camshafts and was factory rated at 238 horsepower with 177 lb-ft of torque. The spark plugs are said to have been replaced in 2021, when an oil change was performed.
